Celebrating a children’s party in the kind of world Sisi (the Austrian empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary), the Emperor Franz Joseph I. of Austria and the imperial children lived in
An event to inform about the increased cure rates of children and adolescents afflicted with cancer
(Vienna, March 22nd 2009) Last Sunday, very special guests were introduced to the court ceremonial and traditions from imperial times. About forty young patients with cancer who are currently under treatment at the St. Anna Children’s Hospital were invited by Franz Sattlecker, managing director, to the Children’s Museum Schloss Schönbrunn. The children, all of them on their way to recovery, and their families had a wonderful day.
They could dress up as princes, princesses or court ladies, learned about the different kind of lives lived by a child of the imperial family and one from the middle classes, and could dance a courtly quadrille. Another highlight was created by the renowned British hair fashionist Tony Rizzo and the Alternative Hair Austria team who did the hair styling and imperial make-up of the little party guests. All of the guests had a lot of fun at the Children’s Museum Schloss Schönbrunn. They also participated in the event to attract public attention to the EC-funded science communication project “Overcoming Cancer with Research” (DIRECT) and to the “Alternative Hair Show” of Tony Rizzo.

BACKGROUND STORY – INSPIRATION OUT OF TRAGEDY
Following the death of his son Valentino, Tony Rizzo launched the “Alternative Hair Show” in 1983 to help raise funds for Leukaemia Research. At the time, leukaemia was still a poorly understood illness that affected both children and adults often with tragic consequences. Following his personal tragedy, Tony was eager to do something in honour of Valentino to help Leukaemia Research in their quest to find better treatments and a cure for leukaemia and related blood cancers.
From humble beginnings, the “Alternative Hair Show” has grown into the world’s most prestigious annual hairdressing event, hosting leading teams and inspirational hair artists from all over the globe.
In doing so, the “Alternative Hair Show” has raised an astonishing amount of over £7 million for research and continues to be a key resource to help Leukaemia Research meet its fundraising targets.
